Shirley Means Greene
Shirley Means Greene is a true daughter of Fairfield County. Born and raised in the Blair, area
Shirley is the youngest child of Henry “Buddy” Means and Magnolia Peoples Means. Alongside
her seven siblings, she learned respect, teamwork, task management and love were hallmarks of
farming and country living. Her church, community and teachers supported and encouraged her.
She excelled in school, graduating Salutatorian of the McCrorey-Liston class of 1965. She
attributes her professional success to the commitment and dedication of her schoolteachers and
administrators at McCrorey-Liston.
Shirley earned a degree in Economics from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC and a
master’s degree in elementary education from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She has
been a teacher, trainer, job placement counselor, cancer control director, fundraiser and
advocate.
In 2004, once she retired from the American Cancer Society, where she served as National
Director of Cancer Control Training and Development, she returned home to Fairfield County to
volunteer her time and talents in organizations about which she is passionate: Little River
Presbyterian Church and Trinity Presbytery, the Fairfield County Disabilities and Special Needs
Board, Fairfield County School District Education Foundation, Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation,
United Fairfield and Fairfield First, Blair Coalition of Churches, and alumni associations for
Johnson C Smith University and McCrorey-Liston, just to name a few.
Shirley with the Fisherman Crew marshalled resources from various county and state agencies
and Duke Energy to fund the Dutchman Creek fishing pier at Lake Wateree. She also served
with others as a stakeholder during the Duke Energy Catawba-Wateree Comprehensive
Relicensing Agreement (CRA) advocating for non-boating anglers resulting in 3 new fishing piers,
2 swim beaches, Molly Creek Landing and a planned bank fishing site.
Shirley was elected to Fairfield County Council in 2020. She completed her second year as Vice
Chair of Fairfield County Council January 2023.
A doting grandmother of five and mother of two, Shirley currently lives at Lake Wateree, Fairfield
County, South Carolina with her husband of 56 years, James L Greene.
